Here is one of my favorite talks that he's given (click <a href="http://www.mormon.org/mormonorg/eng/basic-beliefs/learning-center-video-popup?sourceId=04f3a899d5e92210VgnVCM100000176f620a____&autoplay=true&startTime=&endTime=">here</a> for quick YouTube excerpt). Another reason we chose the name Holland is because Cody proposed to me in a castle in The Netherlands. It is such a beautiful country and is a sentimental place for both of us, since Cody spent about nine months there while we were engaged. Hollie's middle name is after my niece, Nicole Brian. He has his normal, toddler tendencies, of course, and he can really sap my energy as any 17 month old would. There are moments with Talmage, however, that truly make me feel unworthy to be his mother. </span><br /><br />Last week, I was carrying him past a large picture of Greg Olsen's "In His Light" that we have hanging in our Dining Room when he motioned toward the picture and made his usual sound when he wants something--"Huu--uhh." I moved forward toward the picture and he smiled at it, like he really recognized who it was for the first time. I said "that's Jesus" and he replied, "Jezuh" as best he could. I repeated it, just to make sure he was really trying to say his name, and sure enough, he said it again. He then started to wave to the picture with one hand, then with both hands (which he's never done before). That was followed by blowing kisses at the picture as we moved away from it.<br /><br />The other night Cody called me in to see Talmage pretend to be a fish, smacking his lips together to make a little popping sound. He was on Cody's lap and they were reading a book, which had a fish on one of the pages. Wanting to show Cody some more tricks that he could do, I went to turn the page of the book when Tal gently pushed the it away and reached his arms up for me to hold him. It was as if he was politely saying, "that's enough of that for now, I really just want to love you, mom." I pulled him up to me and he squeezed his little arms around me. I started to cry...I think it was partially out of gratitude and partially because I don't want to let go of the tender moments I have with this little guy. He is so loving and snuggly for a baby his age. Not to mention good-natured and sweet. I don't want him to grow out of any of those precious qualities.<br /><br />Perhaps there are some families that have more than one child this lovable. Some parents might not think Talmage is that out of the ordinary. They are probably right. In my circumstances, however, he is just what I need to counteract the hard times I experience with some of my other children. When Cody and I struggle with the behavior of our twin boys, I find that Talmage is a great source of comfort and peace.<br /><br />Though he is starting to become a little bit of a nuisance to his older siblings, it is neat to see how Talmage seems to have wormed his way into their hearts. Before we said our family prayer tonight, I asked each of the kids to talk about their worries, so that we could pray over them. Hunter said he was worried about Talmage choking on something. Grant said he was worried about Talmage getting hurt. Talmage is also showing more affection towards them. He gives them hugs and makes a sound like "Awwww" as he's hugging them. He starting to say their names, as well..."Nana" is "Savannah." He's still working on Hunter and Grant.<br /><br />The only thing I would modify about Talmage's behavior is his clinginess towards me and Cody. I would love for others to share in the joy of his love. He seems to only have eyes for Mom or Dad, even if the older siblings are around, though he still waves and sometimes even blows kisses to the nice strangers he sees at the store! The Morganshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08812906715757274791noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4924071026904970225.post-50867441374343939092009-03-02T00:23:00.001-08:002009-03-02T00:33:02.375-08:00I spent a great deal of time completing this book for my daughter...I think it was worth it. I'm waiting for a special occasion to read it to her. Can't wait to tackle the rest of the gang's baby books! Couldn't we just add one more hour to each day?<div><br /></div><div><a href="http://www.heritagemakers.com/?event=projectBrowse&projectId=ccfc4a1c-3048-6168-a6f8-37eed86abd44&productId=5&projectSponsor=158122">Click here to view </a><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-style: italic;"><a href="http://www.heritagemakers.com/?event=projectBrowse&projectId=ccfc4a1c-3048-6168-a6f8-37eed86abd44&productId=5&projectSponsor=158122">Savannah's Story--A Sweet Beginning!</a></span></div>The Morganshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08812906715757274791noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4924071026904970225.post-49692503175361528422009-03-01T22:38:00.000-08:002009-03-02T00:05:00.894-08:00Parental RewardsWe have a marble system at my house. When a child completes a chore, they earn a marble and place it in their marble jar. Each marble is worth 50 cents. When they want something extra (beyond their physical, emotional, and spiritual needs), then they pay a marble or turn their marbles in for cash to buy something they've been saving for. Cody and I are not as disciplined in using the system as we should be. Most of the time, the kids come out ahead--we are better at giving the marbles than taking them away.<div><br /></div><div>Sometimes I wish there was a token system for parenting. I often feel I'm figuratively "losing my marbles" on a daily basis! Just recently, however, we had a few "token" experiences that filled my maternal jar to max. capacity. Some of these stories might not seem "token" to those on the outside. I consider them to be milestones, however, as we face daily episodes of short attention spans, bouts of anger, and mood swings as well as other normal kid tendencies.</div><div><br /></div><div>Token moment #1: Hunter was having a really hard time last week. He was in one of those moods in which his self-esteem and ability to function were in their lowest states. As he was in time-out, bawling and moaning, Grant approached Cody and said, "Dad, I feel bad for Hunter, is there something I can do for him?" Cody, feeling it was important to use this as an opportunity to teach compassion said, " Would you like to take his place?" Grant agreed and dutifully went to serve his brother's time out. </div><div><br /></div><div>Token moment #2: Grant offered to take Hunter's turn emptying the silverware out of the dishwasher--their least favorite part to empty. When Hunter accepted the offer, he said "Thanks, Grant. You're the best!" </div><div><br /></div><div>Token moment #3: A conversation I had with Savannah recently showed me how pure my daughter's heart is!</div><div>Savannah: Mom, I just wanted to tell you that while you were upstairs I took another brownie and ate it. I just feel bad and I always want to be honest with you. I'm really really sorry!</div><div>Me: That's okay Savannah. Thank you for telling me. I have a hard time resisting brownies, too. </div><div><br /></div><div>Token moment #4: A similar conversation with Savannah at bedtime revealed that she was laying awake at night worrying about how she accidentally let the neighbor's dog out of their house and never told them. This particular dog has accidentally been let out a few times, so this <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_0">occurrence</span> was not too out of the ordinary. I made a few suggestions about how to resolve guilt and suggested she might want to speak with our neighbor as it would probably make her feel better. I forgot about the conversation, but sure enough, after a few days I was speaking with our neighbor when Savannah anxiously approached her and said " I just wanted to let you know that when I was over at your house, I accidentally let the dog out. Can you ever forgive me?" Of course, my neighbor was very gracious and promptly forgave her. </div><div><br /></div><div>Token moment #5: The primary teacher came up to me and told me how wonderful Grant did in class one Sunday. They were talking about Book of Mormon heroes and were asked to draw a picture of them and describe their picture. Grant drew a picture of President <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_1">Hinkley</span> standing at the pulpit in General Conference and told everyone that he wasn't in the Book of Mormon, but he talked about it and told everyone to read it! I had told him not too long befor that how President Hinkley had challenged everyone around the world to read the Book of Mormon at the same time, and that Cody and I had decided to participate in that challenge. I was so pleased that he remembered! </div>The Morganshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08812906715757274791noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4924071026904970225.post-69341906263509970262009-02-15T22:16:00.000-08:002009-02-15T22:59:44.895-08:00Family Holiday Photos<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgt6qNPvKYVu0er-h-Y3SCm2ykYk7JOfAtPJsiDr-f6sYCCLxBdyRP0XwLrTEp7-m1Y_cSXdlONw5wNYI34SyeGpdpvBvClooAP1yMAYPdnJo8hiZ0fxiB0Mnc8r_iPSShfy3qXPyfjQZc/s1600-h/IMG_7686.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgt6qNPvKYVu0er-h-Y3SCm2ykYk7JOfAtPJsiDr-f6sYCCLxBdyRP0XwLrTEp7-m1Y_cSXdlONw5wNYI34SyeGpdpvBvClooAP1yMAYPdnJo8hiZ0fxiB0Mnc8r_iPSShfy3qXPyfjQZc/s320/IMG_7686.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5303285853336800306" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgaYCJ8bz9O2RCGSkm6fk7_FtMgc3UEd9zr2N5BAFFa8FK1VMxRlpGsajSLQDry-ru7WS_f1flFNti3BwNrkhpEMyeIG4oZ-mY3zdjwWQOpxgEF1YhYQg5EtZK9kP2zFWpOtBbnQN-YSso/s1600-h/IMG_7852.jpg"><img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgaYCJ8bz9O2RCGSkm6fk7_FtMgc3UEd9zr2N5BAFFa8FK1VMxRlpGsajSLQDry-ru7WS_f1flFNti3BwNrkhpEMyeIG4oZ-mY3zdjwWQOpxgEF1YhYQg5EtZK9kP2zFWpOtBbnQN-YSso/s320/IMG_7852.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5303279802201681154" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgju4EIE5TPSa-9swoDiferYqoLghekxULFlgIFRvEdh35zsxj6_M_ull29OfUubA3eOiBMEWW8agoyB9GQX5Fc4ixEqDbq3-XK46pnMYywQGFQ1hDGHoRhON3n2WLzo8YPcKVN7gxjDe4/s1600-h/IMG_7745.jpg"><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgju4EIE5TPSa-9swoDiferYqoLghekxULFlgIFRvEdh35zsxj6_M_ull29OfUubA3eOiBMEWW8agoyB9GQX5Fc4ixEqDbq3-XK46pnMYywQGFQ1hDGHoRhON3n2WLzo8YPcKVN7gxjDe4/s320/IMG_7745.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5303279244407688898" /></a>A friend of ours shot these pictures at a nearby park in November...Tumbleweed Park is one of our favorite places to hang out as a family! October was really busy for our family. The kids had a break from school for 2 1/2 weeks, so we started out with a trip to Disneyland (leaving Talmage with Aunt Jenny). Just a few days after we got back, Savannah, Talmage and I went to Richmond for a few days to visit Aunt Missy. While we were there, we hung out with the Bybee family, saw the James River, the Richmond Folk Festival, the Zoo, and (one of my favorites) a store called "For The Love of Chocolate"! Savannah and I also took off for one day to go to Busch Gardens, Williamsburg. Finally, last week we celebrated Talmage's first birthday, the boys' seventh birthday and Halloween! Whew! I'm glad it's over! I need a vacation from all this partying!<br /></div><div><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>As I look back at the past month, I'm reminded of a conversation I had with my mom about four or five years ago when I told her we were not going to take a family vacation that year because we felt the boys were just too difficult to transport long distances! In a very nice, but urgent, tone she encouraged me to make memories with my children. I'll never forget the way she said it. It was one of those conversations that I don't remember the exact words she used, just her motherly intuition and her great sense of concern. While we did not make a trip that year, Cody took some time off of work and we tried to do some fun things around town. I'm grateful for a Mom that showed her children that life is fun, no matter how much money you spend or how imperfect the circumstances are!<br /></div><div><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>At times I have doubts that I'm doing enough to foster the emotional and spiritual growth of these little ones. I'm aware of how much time it takes to raise a child. Times it by four and it's enough to run me ragged. Fortunately, It's getting easier to see the fruits of my labors as my children get older. I rejoice in the little things they do that show me I might be doing an okay job as a mom. </div><div><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>Two recent experiences come to mind. First, there was a program at church that all of the children participated in on a Sunday this past month. Cody and I could hear a very loud child singing (louder than the rest of the children). Every song was sung with almost perfect accuracy in lyrics and pitch. This particular child , bless his/her heart, stood out so much that I was quite surprised at how he/she belted out the songs and thought, perhaps, that the integrity of the music did not call for such strong singing. I looked all around and could not determine who it was. When the program was finished, I asked my daughter who it was and she said it was her!!! I really was shocked. She doesn't normally sing in such a way. Apparently, the leaders said it was important for the kids to sing out because they couldn't hear them very well during the program rehearsals. So, my daughter took it upon herself to be responsible for making sure everyone heard the many songs that they had been working on all year! I'm sure the Heavens are smiling down on that girl!<br /></div><div><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>The second experience was yesterday, when I stayed home from church with all of my boys because Talmage was sick with a fever. Because it was an unusually long meeting (a conference) we kept the older boys home as well. They had dutifully gotten dressed, however, in their button down shirts and slacks. When I asked Grant if he wanted to change he said, "No, Mom, because I want to show respect to Jesus." </div>The Morganshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08812906715757274791noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4924071026904970225.post-32114418480475275552008-09-14T22:26:00.000-07:002008-09-15T23:47:13.722-07:00Most recent major events...<div style="text-align: left;">In August, we attended a family reunion (my side) in Hesperus, CO. We had a great time participating in our "Family Olympics" with all 7 of my siblings and their families (Scroll down to see picture). I think the final tally was 29 adults and 28 children, with only one nephew missing--he is serving a mission in Las Vegas, NV. While there, we also were able to hold a small ceremony to dedicate the remains of my mom, Carolyn Young Larsen, who passed away in January. We were also happy to welcome my dad's new companion Norma, to the family! <br /></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">I look back on the experience of coming together with my family with many strong emotions. I am very grateful for the men and women that my siblings have become. Looking at them, it is easy to see that my mother's legacy lives on in each of her children. What a powerful force for good she left behind! I am confident that her influence will continue for generations. I have personally resolved to emulate her optimistic nature, her love for others, and her joy of living. </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">As I was about to leave my boys' room tonight, the thought occurred to me that I should stick around and create one of those lasting moments--just like the ones that are etched in my mind of my own mother wrapping her arms around me and listening to my worries and fears. I hate to admit it, but sometimes I ignore that thought because of the many tasks that await me around the house. The question comes to mind, however, "How many times did my mother hold me before the experience became a permanent part of my memory that almost seems tangible?" When it comes to my children, I'll try to err on the side of more frequent occurences. I want them to never doubt the love that I have for them. Just as I never doubted the love my mother had for me.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">I love the recent article in the August Ensign by President Thomas S. Monson. One of my favorite quotes states: </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space:pre"> </span>How fragile life, how certain death. We do not know when we will be required to leave this mortal existence. And so I ask, "What are we doing with today?" If we live only for tomorrow, we'll eventually have a lot of empty yesterdays. Have we been guilty of declaring, "I've been thinking about making some course corrections in my life. I plan to take the first step--tomorrow"? With such thinking, tomorrow is forever. Such tomorrows rarely come unless we do something about them today.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">For the full article:</div><div><a href="http://lds.org/ldsorg/v/index.jsp?vgnextoid=2354fccf2b7db010VgnVCM1000004d82620aRCRD&locale=0&sourceId=caace97864a6b110VgnVCM100000176f620a____&hideNav=1">LDS.org - Ensign Article - May We So Live</a><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div>The Morganshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08812906715757274791noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4924071026904970225.post-18549934264498921782008-09-13T10:19:00.000-07:002008-09-15T23:47:42.746-07:00Update on the Morgans!<blockquote></blockquote><blockquote></blockquote><blockquote></blockquote><blockquote></blockquote><blockquote></blockquote>The Morgans are jumping on the blogging bandwagon! And it's not even that hard! Alicia is very excited to have a way of telling the world about the wonderful things our family is doing and the small lessons that we are learning through trial and observation. We invite you to take part in our journey as our little family strives to grow and enjoy our time together. Life with four children is NEVER dull. <div><br /></div><div>For those who haven't seen us in awhile, let me catch you up to speed. Cody is doing really well in his photography business. Check out his website <a href="http://www.savvyphotos.com/">http://www.savvyphotos.com</a>. He is the Sunday School President for our local church organization.</div><div><br /></div><div>Alicia continues to teach voice privately. She has private as well as group classes in session. She is also continuously working on writing and arranging her own music...So much to do, so little time to do it! She is the Young Women's Secretary in the local LDS church congregation. (Can you believe it? There's actually no music involved!). Check out some of her projects with Jeanni Gould--a favorite is "Only This Morning"from the CD "A Woman's Heart," but she is involved in most of Jeanni's other projects, as well. <a href="http://www.jeannigould.com/">Jeanni Gould - Award Winning LDS Songwriter and Author</a></div><div><br /></div><div>Savannah is still passionate about horses and other animals. She is taking horseback riding lessons and piano. Most of the time, however, she can be found with her nose stuck in a book--she is averaging one chapter book a day!</div><div><br /></div><div>Grant is enjoying first grade and just started tennis lessons. He also enjoys playing the wii--he is so good that he's already surpassed the skills of his father!</div><div><br /></div><div>Hunter is also in first grade, taking tennis lessons, and getting really good on the wii! He will be playing "Christopher Columbus" in his class play. </div><div><br /></div><div>Talmage "the tank engine" is already walking (since the day he turned 10 months). He is he happiest baby in the world. We love his rolls of fat! His only flaw is that he loves mom a little too much. She can't go anywhere without him freaking out unless Dad is there to take her place!</div><div><br /></div>The Morganshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08812906715757274791noreply@blogger.com0
